On the fringe of the downtown eastside (DTES) of Vancouver BC Canada, within the infamous hemp zone of the 300-block of West Hastings Street. Cannabis smoking is well-accepted, but lately tobacco cigarette smokers have been under attack, with a city bylaw forcing tobacco smokers to do so while at least 6 metres (or about 20 feet) away under threat of a heavy fine. This is a video clip captured when an anonymous BCMP store staffer came outside to “request” that smokers move away from the breeze which carried tobacco smoke into his shop. The unlicensed 420 Variety store across the street sells tobacco, and is controlled by the hemp-themed BCMP shop, in which the staffer works; the nicotine nazi may have a conflict of interest. The discussion remained civil, but it seemed that one party tried using cheap emotional manipulation attempts, while the other quickly identified root assumptions and responded well to them in favour of tobacco smokers’ rights. There may be a further underlying fear (or lack of acceptance) of death; this seems to be the overall root of the argument.
